No Drilling Lethbridge is thrilled that Goldenkey Oil has announced it will not be submitting an application to drill and frack for oil and gas in Lethbridge.
The Lethbridge community has been united in its opposition to Goldenkey’s plan to drill 3 exploratory wells in West Lethbridge. An 11,000 signature petition calling on the Alberta Government to ban drilling for oil and gas within Lethbridge city limits was tabled in the legislature in March. Another 2000 signatures were added in April. Our community’s position was further galvanized by the public opposition expressed by local elected officials and organizations.
No Drilling Lethbridge thanks the residents of Lethbridge for their attention to the issue of urban drilling. Thank you to our dedicated, passionate volunteers who took the petition door to door in the dead of winter, showed up in droves at informational events, displayed No Drilling Lethbridge signs and buttons in their windows and on their lapels, and wrote letters to the Alberta government, the Alberta Energy Regulator, and Goldenkey Oil.
No Drilling Lethbridge also thanks the Lethbridge City Council, Lethbridge School District No.51 Board of Trustees, and the Holy Spirit Catholic School Board, Lethbridge Chamber of Commerce, University of Lethbridge, Youth Advisory Council and Lethbridge and District Association of REALTORS® for their public announcements against Goldenkey’s plans and urban drilling.
No Drilling Lethbridge encourages Lethbridge residents to remain vigilant to ensure that drilling for oil and gas does not happen in our city in the future. Goldenkey Oil has withdrawn its plans to drill in Lethbridge but our Alberta Government has not yet banned drilling in Lethbridge, nor has it delivered on its 2-year long promise of an urban drilling policy.
